WTFPockets and WTFShield™ – EMF Radiation Shielding

Posted April 11th, 2014 by Drago Galenic with Comments Off

We’ve had a ton of questions come in about the WTFPocket and its features, particularly the EMF radiation shielding.

Hopefully, this post will straighten some of that out.

WTFJeans V3 pockets

There are hundreds of smaller studies that indicate EMF radiation causes everything from DNA strand breaking and sperm immobility to cancer, and other large studies that say there is no evidence supporting these findings.

Rather than debating who’s right and who isn’t, here’s an article on CNN that will help you start to dig deeper and draw your own conclusions. And for good measure, one from the US National Cancer Institute.

We prefer to limit our exposure to EMF radiation, and we’ll leave our discussions about it to that, because we are not experts in this field.

We found an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified company that produces a fabric made of a very thin copper mesh that blocks more than 99.99998% of cell-phone radiation, and was used for medical and military purposes.

We ordered some and of course, wrapped our phones in it to see if they would still work. They didn’t. That was good enough proof to us.

We couldn’t cover the whole inside or outside of the pocket in this fabric, or else your phones wouldn’t work at all, so instead, we cut rectangles of this material into the shape of the smartphone, and then sealed it in a comfortable plastic pouch and called it the WTFShield™.

We needed to make sure this shield was held securely in place between the smartphone and the body, so it provided the maximum possible protection to the body tissues which were absorbing the most radiation, while still being comfortable and not interfering with the awesome easy in&out functionality the WTFPocket provides, so we built a receptacle for it onto the back of the WTFPocket, underneath the innerside of the hands pocket. That’s confusing, so here’s pics.

WTFPocket inner side

Now if you lift up one of those “hands” pockets… you will see…

WTFPocket

The WTFPocket!

The WTFPocket is made out of that uber-comfy microfiber, and that green/grey piece of fabric sewn on the back is what holds in the radiation shield…

WTFShield
See?

So the shield is not in, but behind the WTFPocket, between your phone and your leg, and even would protect your hand if your hand was in the hands pocket.

The hands pocket prevents the WTFPocket and shield from ever touching your leg, so you never feel it – it’s super comfortable and unnoticeable.

EMF radiation acts like a wave, and so the front and side parts of the phone (not covered by the WTFShield™) still broadcast EMF waves as normal, and some of these waves will still go through your leg and body, but more are directed outwards.

We found as soon as we opened this copper fabric we wrapped our phones in, even just a tiny bit to take a picture, it would regain signal again. EMF waves are this way – they are very sneaky ;)

So normal cell phone operation is not noticeably affected.

It makes us feel better to have them in our jeans. How you feel about it is up to you.

Hope that helps!

WTFJeans V3 has launched!

Posted April 7th, 2014 by Drago Galenic with 1 Comment »

What a crazy weekend!

We officially launched the V3 on Saturday, at 9 am in the morning (Eastern European time), after a wild launch party on Friday night featuring 2 live bands – “Caracas” and “Country Strike”. Awesome.

Introducing the V3!

The Croatian websites published the news first, and as we progressed into morning hours in North America, Mashable published the news, and our Tweetdeck started singing.

For a while, it seemed like we might have been a worldwide trending topic, but that requires about 2 hours of several tweets per second, and we didn’t quite make it this time around.

Orders started pouring in, emails, questions, requests and so on. Then we started seeing a bunch of orders with Visa 3d being rejected. (It turns out that because our merchant account is somewhat new, it takes a while for the database of banks of other countries to update with our information, much like the way DNS server information propagates.) The 3d secure feature is working fine in Croatia, and should be working in all other countries soon.

In any event, we managed to pull through it all and have a monumental heap of large publications just waiting to publish our story.

So, here are the 2 big new exciting features we’ve been promising, on top of the new WTFPocket being streamlined into the inside of the jeans, many design upgrades and pockets for your hands (which you can read about here)

EMF Radiation shields!

Some people might start thinking we’ve gone over the edge with this feature, but to heck with them.

We make these jeans for ourselves, our friends, and our fans.

So we added a shield to help protect ourselves from cell-phone radiation, because we were always uncomfortable with the fact that EMF Radiation is constantly blasting from our phone.

Introducing the V3!

Now, there have been many studies, involving many scientists from many countries conducting extensive studies to determine the negative effects of cell-phone radiation, and some say it causes all sorts of problems, and other studies say it does almost nothing to you.

The grand summary of it all?

Basically: The long term negative effects of this radiation are inconclusive, but it’s a good idea to keep your cell phone away from your body when not in use.

Re-assuring, isn’t it?

One thing is not disputed… the fact that a whole lot of that EMF radiation is being absorbed by our body’s tissues near the phone.

Well, we wanted to be VERY comfortable with the fact that we have a phone in our pockets, dammit.

So we found all sorts of radiation shielding, including one very impressive copper-mesh fabric that blocks 99.999% of the EMF radiation passing through it.

We built a “shield” of this stuff, and a custom receptacle for it into the back of the WTFPocket to hold it there securely between your iPhone and your body, so it will reduce the EM radiation in the parts of your body nearest to the smartphone, the parts which are most powerfully radiated by the smartphone.

Being the geeks that we are… we had to find out empirically just how well it works, so we wrapped our phones in this stuff, and sure enough, they didn’t work anymore! We can put a video of that up, if you want… just let us know in the comments.

Liquid and stain-proofing

Using nanotechnology, humanity has figured out how to make jeans repel water and stains, and it’s about time.

It’s amazing technology, and it has been used in clothing for years, but it just hasn’t hit mass market yet because the jeans need to be shipped to a highly-specialized nanotechnology company, and then go through several processes to be treated.

But, we wanted to wear the best jeans in the world, so this had to be a feature… And it is probably the most entertaining feature on these jeans…

Introducing the V3!

This water and stain repellency is a result of a few treatments, which embed nano-scale particles throughout the fabric. While these particles remain separate, they are so small and close together, that the inherent static electrical forces between them create a sort of “static barrier” that reduces the angle of incidence and contact area of the water, so it almost doesn’t even touch the fabric.. it basically just “beads up” , and slides right off!

Even if you dump a gallon of mustard, chocolate sauce and gravy on them and hose it off with water, you and your iPhone will remain dry! (provided you don’t pour liquid directly into the pocket)

It lasts at full strength for 20-40 washes or so, depending on daily wear & tear, and harshness of laundry detergent, but since they stay clean much longer than normal jeans, they don’t need to be washed nearly as much.

You can ride your bike in the rain, and eat a messy cheeseburger lunch,  and still show up to work, with your pants (and iPhone) clean and dry.

Heck, you can even just hose your pants down with a garden hose once in a while, as the water will pick up dirt particles just loosely hanging onto the surface and carry them off with it, as it rolls off.

We’ve also added the ability for you to get a custom tailored size, and even add in a personalization message.

So that’s it. The most amazing features on what are probably the most advanced pair of jeans in the world…

Check out this short (under 3 minute) video we made explaining all the features here:

Announcing WTFJeans V3 – Quality Smart Clothing

Posted March 19th, 2014 by Drago Galenic with 10 Comments »

It’s a few weeks until we launch what are the most advanced pair of jeans available, ever.

V3 Buttons

Big claim from a tiny company, but you know us. We care about making the best jeans possible.
We completely redesigned WTFJeans V2, inside and out.

We took 5 months to go over every little detail with our designer and manufacturers, and we improved the bigger details, like:

wtfPocket V3

  • The wtfPocket (the feature that started the whole story) is inside the jeans now, so that they look better, and we put them lower on the thigh so that it’s even easier to get your iPhone in and out.
  • We’ve abandoned the “USB pocket feature”, because we all use the cloud now, and we’ve added pockets for your hands.

We even improved the little details, like choosing an original design with orange thread and a wild stitching pattern for the internal parts of the jeans, matching orange print, using a different colored thread on the outside of the jeans, and even making a custom branded set of buttons, with a wide concave top button to make it even easier to grab and put your jeans on, and to take them off quickly.

V3 internal parts of the jeans

The micro-fiber cloth we chose to snuggle, protect, and clean those fingerprints off your iPhone is still there, and we added a few other features, like making the belt loop in the back into a “V” with a little “3” beside it, and a poromeric leather rear tab…

 poromeric leather rear tab V3

Aside from these changes, we’ve got 2 seriously big, new, exciting features to announce. Just give us some time to get some photographs and videos of them ;)

Croatian Company Pravi Klik Acquires WTFJeans

Posted August 30th, 2013 by Pedja with Comments Off

The WTFJeans advanture started at the end of 2009 when the couple of us geeks wanted to make jeans for ourselves that would help us to easily put in and out the smartphone from the pocket while we are sitting.

First for fun, the whole story has become a serious business via Twitter and Facebook. Business which had lots of ups and downs, just like any other business.

Croatian Company Was Close To A WTFJeans Acquisition

After more than three years of work on WTFJeans, I learned a lot. I am especially proud that WTFJeans menaged to become a Worldwide Trending Topic on Twitter and found its place on Mashable, TechCrunch, Time, but in many other well-know media.

Since the majority of our customers are in the U.S. and we are in Europe, we came across a lot of logistical problems that I was not able to overcome during all this years. Moving of WTFJeans in the U.S. I saw as the only solution of these problems. Unfortunately, I was unable to find an investor for it and only two options has remain: either to close WTFJeans or put it on sale. I never wanted that WTFJeans adventure stops.

Fortunately, I heard from Hrvoje and with his partners from the firm Prvi Klik he has given me an offer I did not want to refuse.

It’s not just about the offer. Hrvoje and his partners Drazen and Dulijan already have very successful projects like Black Egg (Crno Jaje) and GoHome. I think this is a team that has ability to raise WTFJeans to a higher level and make a respectable worldwide business of it.

I wish them all the luck in the future business and thank them for bringing this decision!

Cheers, Pedja ;)

Ready? Steady. Go! There’s still 102 pairs left at the price of $99

Posted March 18th, 2013 by Pedja with Comments Off

Spring is coming with the desire to adapt our clothing to the weather. We decided that we need something little differently from V2, which we wore all winter long. We need a pair of pants perfect for the hot weather, and since we won’t be wearing jackets any more, we will need a few pockets for our gadgets, too. We’ve decided to make a V3 model that will be comfortable to wear all the way to September or October. After that we will decide what comes next.

In order to realize the V3, of course, we need a lot of cash that we still don’t have.

WTFJeans Sold

We decided to sell everything that’s left of the V2 on our stock, around 100 pairs of jeans at the price of $99*. That money will be directed toward the production of V3.

So if you have not yet purchased your V2 or if you already have one, and you wear it enthusiastically, now is the best moment to buy another pair. After this sale, V2 will be the part of WTFJeans history. :)

The only thing about buying the V2 on our sale at the price of $99*, you will not be able to exchange it or get a refund. So, double check the size you are ordering. We made a size guide in inches and centimeters, to help you find the perfect size.

Ready? Steady. Go! There’s still 102 pairs left at the price of $99*! You just need choose your number and put it in the basket – and of course, do not forget to use promo code 99FORV3 ;)

* The amount your credit card account will be charged for is obtained through the conversion of the price in Dollar into Serbian dinar according to the current exchange rate of the Serbian National Bank. When charging your credit card, the same amount is converted into your local currency according to the exchange rate of credit card associations. As result of this conversion there is a possibility of a slight difference from the original price stated in our web site.

WTFShirt Crowdfounding Campaign is Over

Posted March 14th, 2013 by Pedja with Comments Off

Today, our first crowdfunding campaign on Indigogo has finished. We had a goal to raise $4000 to be able to go into serial production. Unfortunately, we failed to reach the goal, but all those who have reserved their shirt will get them sometime in April, after we make them.

WTFShirt - Indiegogo

Altogether, we will make 30 WTFShirts, probably making it a collector’s item. :)

Entire WTFTeam wants to thank the entire community for the huge support we have received from you. No matter was it through direct contributions or through your tweets, Facebook and other shares and likes. It really meant a lot to us, thank you very much!

Our WTFadventure doesn’t end here. For this spring we have planned a new project and we’re already working on it. We will be able to give you more information in a few days. Once again, thank you very much!

WTFShirt: Shirt With Specially Designed Smartphone Pockets

Posted February 24th, 2013 by Pedja with Comments Off

Voila, after two months, we are done working on out WTFShirt and it’s ready for production. This time around, we will need your help with the launch. We decided to use Indiegogo to launch the first batch of WTFShirt. To thank you for your help with the launch, we made several Pearks that might be interesting to you.

WTFShirt

As we announced earlier, WTFShirt will have two pockets in the front, specially designed for smartphones. They will be iPhone 5 compatible, but any smartphone up to 4.87″ x 2.31″ x 0.30″ will fit perfectly. On the inside of the pockets there will be a little gap adjusted for a headphone cable and the holder inside the collar will serve to hold it.

The cool thing about this shirt lies in the bottom right corner of the shirt. It is a small cloth, hidden on the inner side, which is perfect for cleaning smartphone screens and glass.

WTFShirt will be available in four sizes. You can check our detailed Size Guide on the campaign site and find the size that fits you the best.

WTFShirt

Since we are going to launch WTFShirt regardless of the outcome of the campaign, we chose Flexible Funding, and the campaign will last until March 18, 2013. All WTFShirt orders on Indiegogo will be shipped April 5, 2013, and after that the shirt will be available for sale on our website.

If you think that our idea is a cool idea and want to support us, you can show your support on our campaign site, but also by sharing it on Twitter and Facebook ;)

Thank you very much in advance.

Personal Branding: Make A Name For Yourself

Posted February 18th, 2013 by Anamaria with Comments Off

Just a few years ago, process of finding a job was much different than today, especially in some industries. You’d write a resume with your formal education, work experience and skills, you would send it to a potential employer and wait to get a feedback. Today, we have more possibilities than ever.

Yes, you are a brand

Social media has the tremendous power to put you in contact with thousands of people. The more people, the more opportunities. First of all, everyone can Google you, so make sure they get useful information about you when they do that. Second, people can’t Google you if they never heard about you, you need to make a name of yourself. In order to build your online brand you need to know all of the possibilities and how all of your activities are working together. It’s important to be consistent so that each part of your social media network can contribute positively to your brand, to your name.

Who are you?

How do you want to represent yourself? Make a list of your skills that are important for the work you do. Be passionate about your passions, let the world know what makes your blood run. Passion and personality are keys to a strong brand. Now when you have that, find you path. What do you want to do? What do you offer? Remember, specialization is the key to success.

Emotions

Get your emotions involved when it comes to creating your brand. You’re not a big not a corporation and people who are going to stumble upon your work, shouldn’t think that. Everything you do should be personal, should represent you as a person. If you’re looking for a name, slogan and logo for your brand, choose something that will characterize and represent you. Another important thing is story telling. Avoid tedious stories, tell your story from the heart, and talk with passion and excitement.

Create your ecosystem and network

Having your own website and/or blog isn’t a privilege anymore, anyone can have one. You don’t have to have mad web design and coding skills to get one, thanks to services like WordPress and Tumblr that offer a lot of good looking and practical themes. Once you get your website, make it the center of your online communication and connect it with social networks you use. Now follow experts in your field, create relationships and learn from them. Don’t think online relationships are enough, go offline and visit networking events related to your field.

Make content

Don’t just stop with sharing someone else’s content, make your own. The best way to express yourself is by writing a blog. Talk about your work, talk about you hobbies, and talk about things you’re passionate about, write reviews… Write about whatever you decide to write, just write and share it with other people. Don’t stop there, make a video, record a podcast, and share your work. The important thing is that you do it frequently, being present online can and will take you to the road to success.

Listen and monitor

Ok, you got yourself out there and you’re making a lot of content. The next step is to monitor reactions. Monitor comments of other people on social networks and your blog. Show that you know how to deal with criticism in a professional manner and be thankful for all the nice words you get. Use Google Alerts to monitor what other media is saying about you. Adjust to the market, change something if necessary. Listening what others want will help you grow.

Pinterest Can Make Your Life Easier

Posted February 13th, 2013 by Anamaria with Comments Off

I’ve been using Pinterest since the beginning and I have to admit, I wasn’t a big fan at first. I remember calling it Tumblr for hipsters and it seemed like that, bunch of people sharing random photos with no obvious reason. As time was passing by, I decided to give it a chance. Soon I’ve learned how wrong I was about Pinterest and how useful it can be. And I’m not the only one who loves Pinterest, total unique visitors to Pinterest increased by 2,702.2% since May 2011.

Bookmarks

Pinterest varies from standard bookmarking sites because it allows you to bookmark via images and video rather than just saving standard page URLs. Visual pin board saves a lot of time when you need to find your bookmark later. If you have a lot of bookmarks and most if you spend more time trying to find something that you need than using it, you need to get a Pinterest account. A few months ago, Pitnerest introduced private boards, so you can bookmark even things that you don’t want to share publicly.

Planning & inspiration

Once you use Pinterest as a planning tool you will never use something else again. It doesn’t matter what are you planning, events like birthdays and weddings, trips, redecorating your home, or even designing a website. You can make a board for inspiration to get some ideas what do you want or you can use it as a to-do list. Another cool feature is being able to share pin boards with your friends, you just need to invite them to your board to co-pin.

Job hunting

Yeah, that’s right, Pinterest can help you find a job. Search for CV design inspirations, make a stunning resume and pin it. If you have a portfolio (designs, photos, articles…) pin them as well, having all of your works in one place will help potential employers to find you. After you do that, make sure you show your passion about things you want to do. Let’s say you’re a web designer, pin designs you like, pin news from design world etc. Don’t stop there, make boards for other things your passionate about, show your other side, you never know who’s looking. Maybe photography is your hobby and maybe someone wants to buy your photos or hire you for some event, extra money is always welcome.

Marketing tool

If you run your own business, Pinterest can be useful when it comes to marketing. Pinterest buyers spend more money, more often, and on more items than any of the other top 5 social media sites (source: comScore). Pinterest generates over 4x as much revenue per click as Twitter and 27% more revenue per click than Facebook (source: Converto). Facts don’t lie, you want to be on Pinterest. Embed Pinterest widgets or buttons on your company’s website, and consistently create pin boards that are populated with images unique to your brand. Photos, product packaging, and infographics will grab the attention of your followers and attract new ones.
